Dear People,
Been awhile. Asking what's new in the comedy world? Well not much going on at Comedy Central. John Oliver's Stand up is still going strong. Here's a look from last week.
Not his best stuff. However, look out for Brendon Walsh. Clear cut comedy that will no doubt get some laughs, I wish I had a different clip because this one sells him short a little.
Comic prodigy raised by bears at birth, he pulled a family from a burning car at 12, and was arranged to marry Princess Diana's younger sister at 16. At the age of 20 he's now taking on the art of laugh.

Comedy Central Presents Season Finale Tonight: Natasha Leggero
Dear People,
It's been an interesting season of CCP. A lot of unknowns, but that did not necessarily translate into a lot of unseen talent. However, the season finale is sure to impress with the always funny high society Natasha Leggero. It'll be on tonight at 11pm in between a slew of reruns. Here's a clip from the special tonight:
I'll probably come back with a review, and possibly an overview of the whole season.

John Oliver's New York Stand Up to premiere this Thursday.
Dear People,
Daily Show correspondent, comedian, and Community star John Oliver is back. The second season of John Oliver's Stand Up will premiere on Comedy Central, Thursday at 12am. The second season will take place in New York and feature new unknown comic's as well as seasoned veterans. What I like most about this show is that it will feature the winners of the Jokes.com Open Mic Challenge. Real undiscovered talent that is waiting for an opportunity to get some mainstream attention. Anyway, here's a clip from a past Oliver performance on the show.

Charlie Sheen to Perform Stand up?
Dear People,
Apparently Charlie Sheen is branching out into live shows, and they're already selling out. The performance "Fastball" scheduled for April 2nd and 3rd is already sold out. I know Sheen is no comic, but I can tell you he did not write a 1 man theatre performance for this. Sheen will be performing a stand up type show for good or bad. I assume his show will be similar to a Christopher Titus "Norman Rockwell is Bleeding" type performance. Being that he is a frustrated actor, he probably will not have a set up - Bang routine. Anyway here's his recent famous rant if you have not already heard it, I assume his show will have many similar themes.

Stand Up Retrap: Mike Vecchione, And Jessi Klein
Dear People,
Managed to catch most of the Comedy Central Presents specials last night. Sadly it was hit or miss for me. Loved Jessi Klein, hated Mike Vecchione.
I wanted to like Mike Vecchione, I really did, but I just couldn't. His material was weak, his rhythm was off, and delivery was poor. It was also very obvious that he was nervous. He didn't come off strong or really have much of a persona. He also had a tendency to repeat words and phrases. Whether this was to keep his rhythm on track (which it didn't really) or for comedic affect (also did not make a difference for) is still unclear to me. Vecchione's Stand up persona would have to be a sort of Buff White guy who is actually very soft spoken. If I had to choose a best clip, which was difficult it would be this one.
Jessi Klein
Jessi Klein was funny. Undoubtedly funny. She never made my sides split but she kept me laughing the entire time. Klein's deal was the Jewish mid 30's single woman who has been around the relationship block. She actually had a type of Tina Fey vibe. Her material was good and she had good timing. I'm not surprised she's not more well known considering how hard it is for female comics to make a name. I have to say though I liked her way better than better known names like iliza shlesinger or natasha leggero. Here's a look at some of her special
That's it for now, hopefully I can catch Daniel Tosh's special this Sunday

New Specials: Daniel Tosh, Mike Vecchione, And Jessi Klein
Dear People,
My weekend is looking shitty, but at least there is new stand up on. Daniel Tosh is getting his own 1 hour special "Happy Thoughts" that will premiere on Sunday. I never understood everyone's obsession with Tosh.0. Mostly because I think it extremely limits Tosh in every creative way. He may as well just be a humorous newscaster. However, if you haven't caught his stand up then you'll be surprised at what he can do. The two new Presents specials are Mike Vecchione and Jessi Klein. Neither of which I know much about, Vecchione doesn't even have a wikipedia yet. That's good though, I'd rather go in fresh than research a comedian and expect something. Anyway, that's all for now.

Kyle Kinane And Matt Fulchiron
Dear People,
Been real busy lately, and still don't have a car but I thought I might as well post a video from the Comedy central presents this past weekend. Kyle Kinane started slow but his act became real funny real fast. He used some shock humor here and there, but it wasn't the kind that would repel anyone, more the kind to wake up an audience. Matt Fulchiron was decent, but forgettable. Anyway here's my favorite bit from Kinane's set.

How Iacono Got His Groove Back
Dear People,
Last night, expectantly, I ended up getting on stage and doing some material. It was a total fluke, I wasn't prepared, and I actually went to see someone else perform. However, in those brief moments I think I found something I had been missing for awhile: passion. The scene was dingy bar on a Wednesday night, and my roommates friend was performing at an open mic. This was a music/comedy open mic which are open mics that I find less than desirable for a comic because the mood isn't set to laugh. Well after listening to 54 year old in a skeleton shirt, and a kid with a mandolin finally my friend went on to perform. Long story short, he didn't speak up, and after about 2 minutes he dropped the mic and said 'fuck this'. I couldn't stand to see a situation like this so in my sloppy drunken haze I stepped on stage and started with whatever material I could think of. I wasn't great, but the whole scene really reinforced something upon me. I AM JUST WASTING TIME. I'm almost 21, I'm not performing consistently (or at all), and I'm so hung up on perfecting written material that I'm not focusing on perfecting it on a stage where it matters. This other amateur comic may not of been ready, but give it time if he keeps doing open mic's he'll be far better off than me whether he's a good comedian or not. I'm going to start filming my docupierence now, and I'm going to get on stage as soon as possible. Finished material or not.
And I'm out for the duece four,
Sean Iacono

Stand Up Recap: Al Jackson & Patrice O'neal
Dear People,
Don't worry, I did not forget about you. I managed to catch new material form Al Jackson, and Patrice O'neal this weekend, sadly I missed Natasha Leggero, the one I was actually most excited to see. I was passed on my floor from PBR and thus unable to set my VCR to record. However the good news is that Al Jackson and Patrice O'neal were both hilarious.
Al Jackson had a real down to earth type vibe. Identified with crowd as person of his crowd. His humor was mostly everyday material for those in their mid 20's. The persona of Al Jackson is excited, but not too excited. He's definitely a performer though, no doubt about it. If I had to do a comparison Al Jackson is the guy at the party that everyone's listening to.His main jokes included starbuck's language, erectile dysfunction, and white people in sports. Anyway here is probably my favorite bit from his set that kind of reminds me of myself.
Patrice O'neal
Patrice O'neal was less consistent for me. I like the latter part of his set. Especially when he goes on about 20 year old's. However, I found the the beginning of his special to be awful material. He's performs well, he has a good character, but he just did not start off well. Honestly his best stuff started when his jokes got dirtier. Which I usually find to be the opposite case. His best jokes we're probably his monthly nosebleeds, and orgasm receipt. It's interesting though because I found a lot of people hyping him up, and he wasn't bad, just not mind blowing either. You can decide that for yourself though.
As for my stand up career, after much procrastination tonight I will make some improvement. I'm going to an open mic show, and hopefully can meet some people who may be able to point me in the right direction.

New Comedy This Weekend Al Jackson, Natasha Leggero, And Patrice O'neal
Dear People,
I feel bad I missed all the specials last weekend. However, this weekend looks promising for new stand up. Patrice O'neal will be receiving an hour long special "Elephant in the room". I've never heard his stuff so I'm excited. Al Jackson is relatively unknown, as he (like many CCP members) does not have a wikipedia page yet, Finally Natasha Leggero is actually a really funny female comic. I find her to be extremely hit or miss, but when she's on she's on. That's about it for now, make sure you all set your tivo.

Ann Coulter was at CPAC
Dear People,
Being very unspecific, I went to CPAC this weekend. The Conservative Political Action Conference. Although my interests in comedy and politics are completely separate, if you can't find a connect between comedy and politics you should probably not be reading this anyway. One of the final speakers at the conference was Ann Coulter. A conservative commentator for fox news, who I have never actually sat down and watched. While listening to her speech at CPAC I actually had an epiphany. Ann Coulter is not a commentator at all but she is reall a comedian or comedienne. The entire speech she made consisted of: Set up - Bang, Set up - Bang, Set up - Bang. It was actually quite hilarious, my only problem with it was that I believe a large group of people took her as serious and not as entertainment. I'm going to show part of her speech (or performance), and honestly it's just a set but based on Liberals vs Conservatives. She even makes pop culture references to Celebrities like Charlie Sheen. I can appreciate good humor against both sides of the political spectrum, but I should probably mention, in case you are unaware this is not an unbiased piece of humor towards democrats.

Blue Monday Stand Up Recap: Chris D'elia, Nate Bargatz, and Billy Gardell
Dear People,
In case you were wondering I did learn how to use my VCR this weekend. The timer function is tricky, but does work. Anyway I managed to catch all three specials this weekend, and I got to say: pretty happy with 2/3rd's of it. Really enjoyed Nate Bargotze's special. He's a young guy, but has a subtle humor. Billy Gardell had an hour special called "halftime" (that may be incorrect, but something along that line). And finally there was Chris D'elia, let's not talk about Chris D'elia...
I can say a few things positive about D'elia's presents special. Technically speaking he had the marks of a decent comedian. He created a character persona for himself, he was lively/well animated, and he had an okay set-up bang rhythm. However, the man cannot write jokes. His finale joke was funny, but I honestly stopped watching in the middle of his performance because it was so bad. I came back later to finish it. For the most part D'elia's act was a clusterball of unfunny scenario stories and fart jokes. Fart jokes are risky, if you do a fart joke it better be funny, unfortunately for D'elia, he lacks that talent.
Nate Bargatze I liked a lot, and I'm glad because I was beginning to think these reviews would be entirely negative. Like I said Nate Bargatze was a young guy, around 28 maybe. He had a subtle humor to him, but the kind of subtly that made the audience want to listen. An odd thing about Bargatze I noticed was for some reason he was (or it looked like he was) wearing latex gloves for his entire performance. Anyway his best bits included a joke on Cambodia, and the 'white race card'. Here's a clip from his comedy central profile.
Finally there was Billy Gardell. While I can't remember the exact title of his special (and neither can the rest of the internet). I believe it was called "Halftime". I have it taped but I'm too lazy to go back now. Anyway, what I saw here was 1 hour of solid stand up comedy. Thank God because after watching Nick Kroll's disaster I needed some. Gardell's set mainly focused on midlife, and new trends of the younger generation. It was a good take on societies changing habits from the perspective of the outdated, older generation. Here's a look at one of his bits, taking from the main theme of his act.
I definitely encourage anyone who feels like a laugh to check out Gardell and Bargatz. Maybe skip D'elia until he puts out some new work. As for my travels into stand up comedy. I'd pretty much at the same place I was last week. I have a notecard full of open mic venues, but I still have to call to see if they actively hold them. As far as my act, I'm about half done with maybe 10 minutes of material. Half of it is finished jokes, the others are still in written idea form. I'm thinking of starting some type of stand up night on my university's campus. I'm involved in organizations now so I know the process of getting a room to use. The idea is actually not to pull off at all. I may be forced to do this if there really is not a way for amateur comedians to perform in my area. Next week I probably won't get to talk about the present's specials because I'll actually be at political conference in DC. I figure if the comedy thing doesn't work out I could always be a politician.

New Stand Up This Weekend: Billy Gardell, Nate Bargatze, And Chris D'Elia
Dear People,
It's the weekend again and that means more stand up. Comedy Central is airing three specials this weekend including comics: Billy Storm, Nate Bargatze, and Chris D'Elia. Supposing I learn how to set my VCR timer I can get to watch them all and still remember. Royal Comedy Tour is also coming to my city in March so I'll have more information on that as well. As regards to myself getting on a stage. I've recently finished a large amount of material and I've found about 7 venues (still have to confirm) that may have open mic's for comics. I've quickly learned my region's stand up scene is virtually nonexistant. It still can't stop me though, I'll just make one.

Stand Up Weekend: Nick Kroll, Sheng Wang & Chelsea Aperetti
Dear People,
This weekend there were three new comic offerings on television (at least on basic cable). Two Comedy Central Presents: Chelsea Aperetti and Sheng Wang, and one full comedy special of Nick Kroll. I have to be honest I taped the Nick Kroll special, but I was pretty drunk on 11pm Friday night for the presents specials. In the future I'll probably learn to use my VCR's timer (DVR is just a fad anyway). You may be asking what does this have to do with the Sean Iacono's journey into stand up? Well as a general rule of thumb watching as much stand up as possible and analyzing it is a good way to understand what works and doesn't. Of course not bearing to my own persona or act, but just a rule of thumb.
I remember Chelsea Aperetti being fairly funny. I've always found it more difficult for female comedians to be as funny as male ones, but she did make me laugh. Of course specific memory is hazy. Sheng Wang I was less impressed. I found his material humorous, but his performance really did not make me laugh.
Nick Kroll: Thank You Very Cool. This was an hour long special on Saturday night. It was not an average special where there was a performance and that was it. Nick Kroll invented several characters and played them out in a story, and even had a few of them on stage. This would of been interesting if it had been funny. It actually was the worst part of the special. I'm not some stand up critic God, but I can tell what's funny and what isn't. And all of his characters: Guido security gaurd, gay fashion designer, Mexican broadcaster, and two very weird old white people almost made me gag from how flat they fell. Which is shame because I really enjoy Kroll's role of Ruxen on The League. As for his stand up, I can't say it was too great. It wasn't terrible, but a lot of his jokes have been done. Such as Michael Jackson material and X restaurant gives me diarrhea. It was decently funny yet unoriginal.
I understand most of these recaps were negative, and for a second article it looks like that I'm getting fairly pretentious fairly fast. However that's not the case. These just were indeed, with the exception of Chelsea Aperetti, poor performances. Now to turn the table's on myself. What hard copy work have I done to be closer to getting on stage? None yet. But I do have a cell phone draft box full of joke ideas that hopefully I will take to paper in the coming days.
Sincerely
Iacono

Journey To Talking To People With A Microphone
Dear People,
My name is Sean Iacono (just go with it). I'm creating this blog to document my experiences in becoming a comic. I have performed stand up before, but gave up quickly. The purpose of this blog is to continually remind me of my goal. That goal is to be doing open mics regularly by the end of my spring semester. This blog will serve as a gateway for: material I've written, documentary like video clips, and discussion about news in the stand up world. As time goes on I'll post more about venues I've scoped out, feedback from others, and hopefully a time line for getting on stage regularly.
